Reaching Goals With The 4 D Approach

Writing a to-do list

Here we are again. The beginning of a new year. Now, I’m a firm believer that we can define our goals, set our intentions and launch at any time; however, the milestone of a new year seems to foster a sense of a clean slate. Maybe we find it easier to let go of what never came to be in the previous 12 months when a new year starts.

In any case, when you set your goals for the year, whether personally or professionally, I want to challenge you to get very intentional about HOW you plan to reach them. Really consider what’s real and relevant to accomplishing whatever you are aiming for and learn to home in on productive activities.

The 4 Ds

This is easier said than done, and in reality, we all have things we are responsible to accomplish. But, when considering these responsibilities or duties, do they need to be done by you? Do they need to be done right now? Do they need to be done at all?

If you have a list of “to-do’s” in front of you that are far more draining than energizing or don’t really move you along on your desired path, consider the 4 D approach.

  1. Can you Delegate it?
  2. Can you Defer it to a later date?
  3. Is it relevant or can it be Deleted?
  4. And finally, should you just Do it and get it out of the way?

Prioritizing the appropriate activities will lead to better and faster results and may even keep you more motivated because you are able to do things that are energy for you versus just more “stuff.”
