Never Allow Mediocrity
Mediocrity is the enemy, not the goal. Your organization must set the bar at excellence. Everything you do, everything the organization does, and every employee should strive for excellence.
You must set crystal clear expectations for operational excellence at all times. This must be communicated up and down your organization in ways that make it stick. Keep it simple, over-communicate expectations, and hold people accountable (in positive ways) when standards are not met. You must always follow through! Once someone slips and there’s no follow up, you’ve set your organization up for disaster! You never want an attitude to develop where people think that you say things, and then don’t follow up on them. You want everyone to know you mean what you say at all levels in the organization.
When new people come on board clear vision, values and expectations must be introduced from the beginning. This must be the foundation of the culture. Rewarding people that show excellence in what they do is also a must. When these things don’t happen, mediocrity will creep in, and that is never a good situation!
What can you do to get rid of mediocrity and allow excellence to shine? Below are a few suggestions:
- Understand and define what excellence means, and exactly how people can display excellence in what they do. This must be in alignment with all key stakeholders and must marry into the vision and key initiatives of the organization.
- Communicate excellence with everyone in the organization and hold everyone to the highest (and consistent) standards.
- Reward those that show excellence in their role and when they are caught in the act of excellence.
- Remove those not committed to excellence. If they can’t commit NOW to excellence, then they won’t commit later.
What are you and your organization doing to remove mediocrity from your organization? What would it do for your organization IF, you aligned everyone and had clarity around the vision and direction?
