Are your people taking the right action and moving forward with key objectives? Think in terms of “profitable action”. Profitable action is any action that moves the organization forward. Everything you and your people do should consciously move toward the direction in which you desire. There is a difference between being productive and being busy! Work environments can be busy, the question becomes, are your people being productive?
What can you do right now to move you, your team and your organization forward?
Think about it. People do a lot of their daily activities without even thinking about them. Why? Because we’ve done it that way for so long, it becomes second nature. We go through the motions without even thinking about it. This is called operating in an “unconscious mindset”. And when this happens, we often lose focus on why we even do certain things, and what impacts those actions really have.
Most importantly, when we challenge ourselves and our actions, we move back into a “conscious mindset”. Ask yourself, why do we do things this way? Is my first task in the morning when I get to work, really productive? Is what I am doing right now going to help me, my staff and my organization move in the right direction? Is this true profitable action?
Here are a few good follow up questions to ask yourself to stay on track with profitable action:
Is there something I can do right now to redirect my activities and focus on productive and profitable action?
What can I do right now to create clarity for my staff around the organizations vision and direction?
How can I help improve the skills of someone on my staff right now?
What can I do right now to ensure everyone understands how important they are to the organization’s success, no matter what their job function?
Are there things I can do right now to set the organization up for future success?
So, challenge yourself to stay in that “conscious mindset” and focus on profitable action. This creates an environment that is both proactive and productive. Take a step back to ensure messaging is aligned and that behaviors are focused on activities to move forward.
